When Emily Benedict returns to her mother’s hometown, she is intent on finding out all there is to know about her reclusive, mysterious mother, Dulcie. Still a teen, Emily moves in with her grandfather whom she has never met. Naturally she is shocked when he is literally a giant, as her mother has never mentioned this. Her quest to find information is soon thwarted, however, since her grandfather, Vance Shelby, is very quiet and has no interest in discussing his absent daughter. Out of options, Emily follows him on his morning routine into town and encounters a beguiling young man who begins to open the world of her mother’s past to her.
Allen has once again crafted a story ripe with Southern sweetness and her special blend of magical realism. As always, her characters are delightful and full of charm and quirks that feel so familiar to small town dwellers. This time she peppers her story with mood-changing wallpaper, a baker who’s goods literally entice others to her, a real gentle giant, a family secret, and the soft spark of forbidden love. Fans of her previous work will not be disappointed, and new readers will find her setting to be as charming as her characters and the story as magical as that enchanted wallpaper.
